ABOUT ME/HOSGELDİNİZ

I hold a BSc. degree from Balıkesir University.My MSc research was about AI (Expert Systems) which I completed in 1999 and my Ph.D. research was about BIM-3D GIS integration which I completed in 2007. My current research interests are in Machine and Deep Learning, Internet of Things, 3D GIS, BIM and Structural Equation Modeling.Teaching: I have started teaching in 1999 and since then I have given lectures at Ege University, Beykent University, Istanbul Kultur University, Istanbul University, Istanbul Esenyurt University, Istanbul Technical University, Bogazici University.Guest Lectures: I have given guest lectures in TU Delft, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Hft Stuttgart, Istanbul Technical University, Yildiz Technical University, and Balikesir University.My Supervisors: Prof.Ghassan Aouad , Prof.Jason Underwood ve Dr.Nigel Trodd(PhD.) The International Journal of Digital Innovation in the Built Environment (IJDIBE) provides new techniques and technologies for the optimization of performance, sustainability, and durability of new and existing buildings and infrastructure within a connected and sustainable built environment. It focuses on research domains ranging from digital design, construction and operations to smart and sustainable buildings, infrastructure, and cities, including building, infrastructure, and city level information modeling, resilient design, machine learning, and digital twins, covering all spatial contexts related to the urban and digital built environment. IJDIBE facilitates the exchange of current scientific information, as well as shares state-of-the art technological and innovative developments within the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry and urban and digital built environment. The journal provides a forum for information dissemination between academics and professionals associated with building and infrastructure lifecycle management, city planning and management, infrastructure management, all disciplines of geosciences, building and civil engineering, disaster management, logistics, environmental planning and conservation, computer graphics, data management, gaming, and so forth. In addition to academics, the primary audience of the journal also includes engineering, architectural, contracting, consultant, and facility management practitioners. Spatial data in a Land Administration (LA) establish a fundamental geospatial data theme (see UN GGIM, 2018) and the integrated geospatial information framework for any Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI). Domain-specific standards, an integral component of the SDI, play an essential role to represent the semantics of domains, specify links between distributed registries and databases, and stimulate the development and implementation for Land Administration Systems (LAS). As an international descriptive standard providing an abstract conceptual schema, the ISO 19152:2012 Land Administration Domain Model (LADM) has been used and is being used as a reference for the implementation of LAS. Various approaches have been used for the LADM implementation that includes elaborating (via a country profile) and realizing a technical model suitable for the implementation (van Oosterom and Lemmen, 2015). LADM focuses on a specific function of LA that is interested in Rights, Responsibilities and Restrictions (RRR) affecting land, and the geometrical components thereof. The land value function of LA is considered outside the scope in the first edition. Recently, for extending the flexible and modular basis of the LADM, a valuation information model is developed for the specification of valuation information maintained by public authorities. It identifies the links between property valuation and the other LA registries and databases (e.g., cadastre, land registry, building and dwelling registries) that may enable interoperability across systems. The conceptual schema of the model provides a common basis to direct the development of local and national valuation databases and information technology products and services, following an approach similar to the LADM implementation. The proposed LADM Valuation Information Model is on the agenda of the development of the second edition of LADM within ISO/TC211. The operability of the newly proposed conceptual model needs to be evaluated through technical implementation. This paper describes the development of a prototype for the implementation of the LADM Valuation Information Model and assesses its operability through a case study for Turkey. The primary aim of the paper is to test the capabilities of the LADM Valuation Information Model using the required and produced data in recurrent valuation processes, but not to build a specific information management system for Turkey.

About The Publication
This paper assesses the awareness and use of information and communication technologies (ICT) systems within the Turkish construction industry. The findings will assist in identifying the future directions and priorities for how to use ICT as an enabler in this country. The research has been carried out via 22 semi‐structured interviews with senior construction professionals within government and private organizations. It investigated the usage and applicability of current information systems and technologies. The interviews then explored the appropriateness of some of the newly emerging technologies to the industry in Turkey. The findings are reported under three categories of: ICT infrastructures and strategies, the use of information systems, and views on emerging technologies. Building information modelling has emerged to address the issues associated with information integration and interoperability in the architectural, engineering and construction (AEC) industry. Today, building information models (BIMs) have become capable of representing detailed geometrical and semantic information about building elements. On the other hand, some urban management tasks, such as disaster management, delivery of goods and services, and cityscape visualization, are managed by using a geographic information system (GIS) as the current state-of-the-art system, as these tasks require a high level and volume of integrated geospatial information. Several of these tasks, such as fire response management, also require detailed geometrical and semantic information about buildings in order to become facilitated through better automation. In this context, this paper first presents an approach proposed for integrating building and geospatial information models and later presents a fire response management case where the integration approach is implemented. The paper starts with a summary of the background on building information modelling and the role of GIS in fire response management before providing an introduction to the software systems integration and the concept of integrated data layers. The paper then explains the integrated data layers approach proposed during the research and the implementation of the approach in the domain of fire response management. The research results confirmed that the proposed approach is applicable in the domain of fire response management and further investigation demonstrated that the use of BIMs as part of an integrated data layer enables the fire response management process to be facilitated through better automation. The current study presents the results of a research investigation into the role of political blogs in the international political communication process by focusing on the 2008 U.S. presidential election and its reflection in the Turkish blogosphere. Four types of analysis were carried out in order to (a) evaluate the overall blogosphere’s reaction in Turkey towards the U.S. presidential candidates; (b) measure the awareness of Internet audience in Turkey about the candidates; (c) identify the main themes of discourse in the Turkish blogosphere; and (d) determine the level of interactivity in blogs in the discussion of the candidates. A total of 205 political blogs were examined. The findings indicate that a direct relationship between the level of online activity of the candidates and the number of blog entries and comments. About The Publication
Construction Informatics deals with subjects ranging from strategic management of ICTs to interoperability and information integration in the construction industry. Studies on defining research directions for Construction Informatics have a history over 20 years. The recent studies in the area highlight the priority themes for Construction Informatics research as interoperability, collaboration support, intelligent sites and knowledge sharing. In parallel, today it is widely accepted in the Architecture / Engineering / Construction (AEC) industry that ICT is becoming a strategic asset for any organisation to deliver business improvement and achieve sustainable competitive advantage. However, traditionally the AEC industry has approached investing in ICT with a lack of strategic focus and low level of priority to the business. This paper presents a recent study from Turkey that is focused on two themes. The first theme investigates the strategic role of ICT implementations from an industrial perspective, and explores if organisations within the AEC industry view ICT as a strategic resource for their business practice. The second theme investigates the ‘perspective of academia’ in terms of future research directions of Construction Informatics. The results of the industrial study indicates that ICT is seen as a value-adding resource, but a shift towards the recognition of the importance of ICT in terms of value adding in winning work and achieving strategic competitive advantage is observed. Some tasks in the construction industry and urban management field such as site selection and fire response management are usually managed by using a Geographical Information System (GIS), as the tasks in these processes require a high level and amount of integrated geospatial information. Recently, a key element of this integrated geospatial information to emerge is detailed geometrical and semantic information about buildings. In parallel, Building Information Models (BIMs) of today have the capacity for storing and representing such detailed geometrical and semantic information. In this context, the research aimed to investigate the applicability of BIMs in geospatial environment by focusing specifically on these two domains; site selection and fire response management. In the first phase of the research two use case scenarios were developed in order to understand the processes in these domains in a more detailed manner and to establish the scope of a possible software development for transferring information from BIMs into the geospatial environment. In the following phase of the research two data models were developed – a Schema-Level Model View and a geospatial data model. The Schema-Level Model View was used in simplifying the information acquired from the BIM, while the geospatial data model acted as the template for creating physical files and databases in the geospatial environment. Following this, three software components to transfer building information into the geospatial environment were designed, developed, and validated. The first component served for acquiring the building information from the BIM, while the latter two served for transforming the information into the geospatial environment.The overall research demonstrated that it is possible to transfer (high level of geometric and semantic) information acquired from BIMs into the geospatial environment. The results also demonstrated that BIMs provide a sufficient level and amount of (geometric and semantic) information (about the building) for the seamless automation of data management tasks in the site selection and fire response management processes. The traditional fragmented nature of the construction industry along with the ad hoc matter in which investments in ICT have been made has resulted in a key cause of the poor performance and inefficiencies of the industry being attributed to the communication and exchange of information. The concept of Building Information Modelling (BIM) emerged to address the seamless exchange of information throughout the life of a facility following early modelling efforts focused on providing a solution to data exchange problems between several CAD and analysis systems. On the other hand, ICT supported collaborative teamwork has been an important aspect of building lifecycle management over the years in order to address the problems related to the fragmented nature of the industry. In parallel, recent studies in the field have demonstrated that BIMs will play an important role in facilitating collaboration. Most of the studies related to collaborative computing in construction have focused on facilitating the coordination and communication aspects of collaboration. In contrast, this paper proposes a system level and BIM-based approach for facilitating collaboration through the entire lifecycle of the building. In this context, the paper presents two design patterns that can be used as a foundation in formulating the design of information systems for BIM-based synchronous collaboration. The proposed patterns will help the system analysts/designers to focus on a system level picture when tackling recurring problems in the design of collaborative environments. Purpose ‐ This paper aims to present a new perspective regarding how newly emerging ICT may have an impact on Building Information Modelling and Management (BIM-M); specifically, towards enabling the next generation of (full state) BIMs. Design/methodology/approach ‐ The paper presents a literature and technology review, and articulates a novel vision for the future of BIM. It starts with exploring how ICT has had an impact on shaping and modernising the sector, compared to the “traditional”, “archaic” and “draconian” heritage. The paper elaborates on the current interpretation of BIM-M and emerging technologies that may change this interpretation from a semantic model to a full state digital building model evolving through the lifecycle of a building. Findings ‐ The vision presented in this paper underlines the focus that BIM-M is now becoming broader, as the information management paradigm shifts from enabling model-based management of shared building information, which provides meaningful data about a building in a standardised way (i.e. BIM 1.0), to enable an integrated environment of distributed information which is always up to date and open for derivation of new information (i.e. BIM 2.0). Technologies such as cloud computing, sensor networks, stateless web services and semantic web are presented as the new facilitators of this paradigm shift. Originality/value ‐ This paper provides value by stipulating a new vision (i.e. BIM 2.0) for BIM-M and BIM (in particular) in light of emerging technologies such as cloud computing, sensor networks and semantic webs. Today Integrated Project Delivery together with Building Information Modeling is being realized as a process of managing a project over a single shared information backbone. In the near future, Building Information Models (BIMs) will be used as unique resources for enabling seamless data level interoperability, which will greatly facilitate the processes in the Building Life Cycle. In this context, enabling the collaborative use of BIMs is becoming essential and is much required by the industry for addressing the issues associated with the poor efficiencies in Information Systems (IS) and productivity. On the other hand, in the new IS architectures, service and resource orientation are becoming widely used, in terms of supporting collaboration over distributed environments. This paper introduces three design patterns which will help in facilitating BIM-based information sharing over the web, and web-based collaborative use of the BIMs. The patterns were developed to formalize the approaches in interacting with the shared BIMs over the web. The first pattern – BIM AJAX – explains how AJAX techniques can be used for supporting information retrieval from BIMs. The second pattern – BIM SOAP Façade – provides a standard coarse-grained interface to reach multiple BIMs over the web. The third pattern – RESTful BIM – elaborates on how BIM-based systems can benefit from the REST (Resource Oriented) Architectures. The paper starts with providing an overview on Building Information Models focusing on their characteristics and functions. Existing indoor navigation approaches such as navigation based on 2D geometries and pre-defined routing remain insufficient for many applications such as emergency response, delivery, utility maintenance and facility management. The insufficiencies caused by existing navigation approaches can be overcome by making use of the advanced semantic and geometric information included in intelligent building models. A key example of such models is Building Information Models (BIMs) which contain detailed geometric and semantic information about buildings. In fact, the BIMs’ structure is very complex for facilitating navigation. This paper presents a new BIM Oriented Modeling methodology resulting in the definition of a new BIM based model (BO-IDM) dedicated for facilitating indoor navigation. The paper later describes the transformation of information from a standard BIM (IFC) into the new model (BO-IDM). The innovation aspects of BO-IDM can be summarized as follows: (i) it provides highly detailed semantic information for indoor navigation and (ii) it represents the non-geo-referenced structure and complex geometries of BIMs with ISO 19107 compliant representations. ERP implementations within large scale construction organizations have yielded more failures than successes. As a result of this high failure rate, the integration capability of ERP systems could not be fully understood and recognized by the construction (AEC) industry. During the previous two decades, the energy saving potential using systematic building management is considered to be important which should be considered through the building lifecycle. Among the wide range types of different buildings, Public buildings are considered as one of the biggest energy-consuming sector in the world and major part of this amount is used by the air conditioning system especially in tropical climates. The most effective decisions related to sustainable design of a building facility are made in the feasibility and early design stages. Building Information Modeling (BIM) can expedite this process and provide the opportunity of testing and assessing different design alternatives and materials selection that may impact on energy performance of buildings. This paper aims at evaluating the efficiency of various types of wall materials with regard to theirs properties on energy saving. The recent developments in the digital technologies have led to an increase in the parametric modelling efforts and the use of parametric patterns in design. In order to manage this new paradigm where the design is becoming more digital, the designer needs to utilize his/her analytical abilities in an effective manner as this is the only way for precise representation of concepts in the actual design itself. The parametric design is a holistic process. A key element of this is the development of design through coding. In this context, the aim of the study was understanding the attitudes of architects and architecture students towards adoption of analytical/algorithmic methods and specifically the object oriented paradigm and design-by-coding. In the first stage a randomly selected group of volunteers were provided training in object oriented programming concepts and design-by-coding over 15 weeks (and a total of 45 hours). Later in this study two data collection tools were utilised to understand the attitudes of the participants towards design-by-coding. The first tool used was an attitude scale, while the second tool used was a web based questionnaire survey. The results indicate that the participants did not show a significant positive attitude towards design by coding. This result might have been caused by the difficulties faced during the study, as the participants were experiencing a design-by-coding exercise as the first time. Public construction projects in countries with economic difficulties are funded by donor organizations. These types of projects in low-income countries have been negatively influenced by the communication gap between the among, consultant and the construction contractor, which emerges because of unclear definitions of responsibilities and problems in exchange of information. All stakeholders face significant problems as a result of this gap. The main objective of this paper is to identify and map the processes of donor-funded construction projects to facilitate clear definition of tasks and roles, and support sustainable communication in donor-funded projects. Following a literature review, the paper provides an analysis of the current processes in donor-funded projects and presents a process map for donor funded projects which is developed based on expert interviews and five case studies. 3D city models have become crucial for better city management, and can be used for various purposes such as disaster management, navigation, solar potential computation and planning simulations. 3D city models are not only visual models, and they can also be used for thematic queries and analyzes with the help of semantic data. The models can be produced using different data sources and methods. In this study, vector basemaps and large-format aerial images, which are regularly produced in accordance with the large scale map production regulations in Turkey, have been used to develop a workflow for semi-automatic 3D city model generation. The aim of this study is to propose a procedure for the production of 3D city models from existing aerial photogrammetric datasets without additional data acquisition efforts and/or costly manual editing. To prove the methodology, a 3D city model has been generated with semi-automatic methods at LoD2 (Level of Detail 2) of CityGML (City Geographic Markup Language) using the data of the study area over Cesme Town of Izmir Province, Turkey. The generated model is automatically textured and additional developments have been performed for 3D visualization of the model on the web. The problems encountered throughout the study and approaches to solve them are presented here. Area and volume values of buildings and building parts have been used in many applications including taxation, valuation and land use planning. Many countries maintain a national standard for representing the measurements of floor areas in buildings. The national standards generally use similar basis for measuring building floor areas, in fact, areas specified in national standards often have semantic differences. Therefore, a number of international standards have been developed for harmonizing floor area measurements; however, they also have differences. This study aims at harmonizing the floor areas defined in the international property measurement standards by revealing the semantic relations between them and formalizing them with an ontological approach. To achieve this objective , the international property measurement standards were firstly examined in order to identify semantics, principles and practices in floor area measurements. Then, the obtained information were utilized to develop a set of measurement ontologies for harmonizing the property measurement standards. Building Information Modeling/Management (BIM) technology has attracted the attention of many researchers and academicians as a new concept that has increased rapidly in the construction sector in recent years. The time-dependent changing society has affected the expectations and demands of the construction industry and triggered/resulted in the production of more complex and original projects accordingly. Building Information Modeling/Management (BIM) concept has become a necessity in today’s construction industry in terms of providing integration between project stakeholders and providing the possibility of processing and storing the project data in a common point. When international studies are examined, it is seen that the implementation of the Building Information Modeling/Management (BIM) approach is a mandatory job and/or task in the construction industries of the developed countries. It is observed that they follow this new trend in their rapidly developing countries. This study proposes a procurement framework based on the implementation of Building Information/Management (BIM) to achieve ‘best results’ in construction projects. A case study presented in this study proves the applicability and usefulness of the proposed Building Information Modeling/Management (BIM) approach in a complex construction project funded by the private sector. Background: GeoInformation, is very valuable for a range of fields ranging from location based services and navigation to smart cities and homes. On the other hand today many fields benefit from Internet of Things (IoT) implementations, where the machine-to-machine and machine-to-human transmission of GeoInformation frequently occurs. This transmission usually occurs in multi-source/multi-target and multiplatform IoT environments. Problem Statement: In many cases real-time GeoInformation stays in its own island of automation, and thus its real value cannot be uncovered. This happens mainly due to inefficiencies and problems that occur in the storage, sharing and exchange of real-time GeoInformation as a result of multi-source/multi-target and multi-platform nature of the IoT architectures. Research Approach: Integration appears as a critical paradigm which should be focused in order to store, manage and transfer of GeoInformation efficiently in these complex environments. In this context, the focus of the study was to test the applicability of different technologies and integration methods for acquisition, transmission and visualisation of multi-source GeoInformation through implementing an IoT Integration Testbed Architecture which is utilizing low-cost hardware (to acquire information), graph databases(to store information) and standard IoT protocols (to exchange information). The implementation explained in this paper covers acquisition of real time GeoInformation from a set of real and virtual sensors, storage of this GeoInformation in Graph Databases, exchange of information through two different communication models (request/response and publish/subscribe) based on standard IoT protocols, and visualization of information by web pages, web mapping services and using a GIS software. In spatial science and urban applications, “space” is presented by multiple disciplines as a notion referencing our living environment. Space is used as a general term to help understand particular characteristics of the environment. However, the definition and perception of space varies and these variations have to be harmonised. For example, space may have diverse definitions and classification, the same environment may be abstracted/modelled by contradicting notions of space, which can lead to inconsistencies and misunderstandings. In this paper, we seek to investigate and document the state-of-the-art in the research of “space” regarding its definition, classification, modelling and utilization (2D/3D) in spatial sciences and urban applications. We focus on positioning, navigation, building micro-climate and thermal comfort, landscape, urban planning and design, urban heat island, interior design and planning, transportation and intelligent space. We review 147 research papers, technical reports and on-line resources. We compare the presented space concepts with respect to five criteria—classification, boundary, modelling components, use of standards and granularity. The review inventory is intended for both scientists and professionals in the spatial industry, such as companies, national mapping agencies and governments, and aim to provide a reference to better understand and employ the “space” while working across disciplines. Property valuation is a process that promotes sustainable development as it supports and forms several land management activities. Access to information on the legal, geometric, physical, locational and environmental characteristics of property units together with the economic indicators are required for an effective property valuation system. Traditional cadastral systems generally provide only two-dimensional (2D) legal and geometric information about property units, however, today’s valuation practices would benefit significantly from three-dimensional (3D) information in order better to estimate and explain values of property units. The purpose of this paper is to examine how 3D spatial datasets and spatial analyses have been used in property valuation, and to develop 3D valuation unit profile(s) in line with the examination results for the recently proposed Valuation Information Model that extends the ISO 19152:2012 Land Administration Domain Model (LADM) from the valuation point of view. The study focuses more on 3D locational and environmental characteristics of property units; particularly visibility and especially viewshed analysis in terms of property valuation. By using open topography, building and height datasets of the Netherlands, a number of viewshed analyses are conducted to show how it can be utilized using different 3D data sources. The main contribution of the article is to present how 3D datasets and spatial analyses could be used to support property valuation activities and to investigate to what extent it is possible and meaningful to include derived 3D characteristics of property units in valuation registries.
